The new playroom is coming along and we couldn’t be happier. This space went from a blah blah storage room {AKA junk room} to our son’s playroom and he LOVES it! I have been receiving some emails and sweet comments on this new space and some questions as to how we made the wood plank wall. So today I am going to share our wood plank wall tutorial with you.
I first fell in love with wood plank walls years ago and we ended up putting board and batten in our master bedroom {I cannot believe this has been 3 years already!}. Anyways, the obsession began and we now have wood on the walls in our son’s nursery, in our entryway, new family room and new office. We also put it up in our $100 laundry room makeover and now it’s in our playroom. Where will be be planking next? You’ll have to wait and see...
Here are some of my inspirations for the playroom wood plank wall:

Both lovely ladies have great tutorials on exactly how they installed their wood plank walls and so I recommend you follow them when completing this project. I basically followed theirs with a few adjustments to customize to our space.
This is what our room looked like before we started this makeover...
We started this project by clearing out the entire room, taping off the trim, and then uninstalling the light, vent fan, and smoke detector, since I would be painting the ceiling. I applied two coats of paint to the ceiling and then worked my way down to the walls and applied two coats there as well. I only painted three of the walls Bedford Gray since the 4th wall would have wood planks installed.
After the paint had dried, we installed the new ceiling fan, cleaned the vent fan, and cleaned the smoke detector. I then primed the wall where the planks would go so that none of the previous dark tan paint would show through the planks once they were up. This is an important step because you will be able to see through the crack in your wood planks.
We also took off the previous dark window trim that was pretty beat up and decided to install new white trim that would look seamless with the new wood planked wall.
My hubby had the 4x8 sheets of wood cut into 6” strips at Lowes {and they didn’t charge us anything to do this}, so all he had to do was cut them to fit around the window, electrical outlet, etc.
The Hubbs used a nail gun to install the wood and and using a level and nickel he made sure the planks were straight, level, and evenly spaced. Next, I went back through with a nail setting tool to sink all of the nails into the wood. I followed up with the 3M patch+primer to fill all nail holes and any gaps in the window trim that we just installed. This patrch+primer is AMAZING and I highly recommend it.
After the patch+primer dried, I used a 300-grit piece of sandpaper {or you could use a sanding block} to lightly sand over all of the nail holes to smooth out the patch and give an even surface to paint. I also sanded down around the window trim and we put a bead of caulk around the perimeter of the window trim where it met up with the wood planks to create a seamless look. Make sure to use a damp cloth to wipe down the wall to remove any dust particles left over from sanding, and vacuum up around the window seal and carpet to make sure dust won’t be flying around during painting.
After everything was painted we let it dry for a couple days before moving our son’s toys back into the room and letting him go crazy. WE LOVE THE RESULTS!
Little guy is already racing cars on the window seal and being a total boy in this space... you totally know what I mean right? I seriously need to hurry up and get this room finished and enjoy it in its prettiness before he destroys it... haha!
